How Much Does Computer Repair Actually Cost?

Computer repair tools and components on a workbench

One of the first things people ask when their computer breaks is "how much is this going to cost?" It's a fair question, and unfortunately the answer is usually "it depends." But here's a realistic breakdown of what you can expect to pay for common computer repairs in the UK.

Typical Repair Costs

These are approximate ranges for the most common services. Prices can vary depending on the complexity of the issue and whether parts are needed.

Virus & Malware Removal — £30–£60

This covers a thorough scan, removal of all malicious software, and a system clean-up to make sure your PC is secure. Most virus removals take a few hours. If the infection is severe and a Windows reinstall is needed, it may cost a bit more.

Windows Installation — £40–£70

A fresh install of Windows with all drivers and updates. This includes activation and basic setup. If you want your data transferred from the old installation, there may be a small additional charge for the backup and restore.

Data Recovery — £40–£100+

Recovering files from a failing drive depends on what's wrong with it. If it's a software issue, it's usually on the lower end. If the drive has physical damage, costs can be higher, and severe cases may need specialist lab recovery which can cost £300+.

SSD/Hard Drive Upgrade — £50–£100

This includes the cost of a new SSD (usually 500GB) plus the labour to install it and transfer your data. It's one of the best value upgrades you can get — your computer will feel dramatically faster.

RAM Upgrade — £30–£60

Adding more memory to your computer. The cost depends on how much RAM you need and what type your computer takes. 8GB to 16GB is the most common upgrade.

General Diagnosis — £20–£30

If you're not sure what's wrong, a diagnosis fee covers the time to investigate the issue and give you a clear explanation of the problem and your options. Many repair shops (including us) will waive this fee if you go ahead with the repair.

Computer Cleaning — £20–£40

Physical cleaning to remove dust, replace thermal paste, and clean fans. This helps prevent overheating and can solve problems with loud fans or unexpected shutdowns.

What Affects the Price?

  • Complexity — A simple virus removal is straightforward. A motherboard-level repair takes more time and skill.
  • Parts needed — If hardware needs replacing, the cost of the part is added on top of labour.
  • Time required — Some repairs take 30 minutes, others take several hours.
  • Urgency — Some repair shops charge extra for rush jobs, though we don't.

Red Flags to Watch For

Not all repair services are honest. Be cautious of:

  • No upfront pricing — A good repairer will give you a quote before starting work
  • "Your computer has 500 viruses" — Scare tactics to charge more
  • Charging for unnecessary work — If a simple fix costs as much as a new computer, something's wrong
  • No explanation — You should always understand what was done and why
