When to Repair vs Replace Your Computer

Your computer is playing up. Maybe it's slow, maybe it won't turn on, or maybe something just doesn't feel right. The big question is: should you pay to fix it, or is it time to buy a new one?

Here's a straightforward guide to help you decide.

When to REPAIR

The computer is less than 5 years old

Modern computers can easily last 7-10 years with proper care. If yours is still relatively new, it's almost always worth repairing unless there's major hardware damage.

The repair cost is less than 50% of a new computer

This is the golden rule. If a repair costs £100 and a new computer would be £400+, the repair makes financial sense.

It's a software problem

Issues like viruses, Windows problems, or slow performance can almost always be fixed without replacing any hardware. A fresh Windows install and some cleanup can often make an old PC feel new again.

Only one component needs replacing

If just your hard drive has failed, or you need more RAM, these are easy and affordable upgrades. An SSD upgrade in particular can breathe new life into an older machine.

When to REPLACE

The computer is 8+ years old

At this age, even if you fix one thing, something else is likely to fail soon. The cost of repairs can add up quickly. It might be time to start fresh.

Multiple components are failing

If the motherboard, CPU, and other major parts are dying, the repair cost can approach or exceed the price of a new computer. At that point, a replacement makes more sense.

It no longer meets your needs

If your computer struggles with basic tasks you need it for, even after repairs, it might simply not be powerful enough anymore. Software requirements increase over time.

Repair costs exceed 50% of a new PC

If you're looking at a £200+ repair on a computer that's already several years old, you'd get better value putting that money toward something new.
